Frequently Asked Questions

Car Rental

Where do I go to collect my rental car at New Chitose Airport (CTS) in Sapporo?

When you arrive at New Chitose Airport, please make your way to the Toyota Desk to complete registration for your car rental. If you are arriving at the Domestic Terminal, you will find the Toyota Desk by the Domestic Tours desk between the JAL Arrivals Gate A and ANA Arrivals Gate. If you are on an international arrival you will find the Toyota Desk at the 1F Curbside Lobby. Once you have completed registration for the rental with Toyota, they will take you on a shuttle bus out of the airport terminal to the "New Chitose Airport Branch" to collect your car.

When returning your car please go to the "New Chitose Airport Popura Branch" and not the airport terminal. Once you have returned the car the Toyota staff will again provide a shuttle bus to the terminal. We recommend that you return your car at least 1.5 hours before your scheduled flight departure.

What license do I need to drive in Japan?

It is Japanese law to carry a valid International Driving Permit (in accordance with the 1949 Geneva Convention) or full Japanese driving license. Driver's must have a physical copy of the IDP on them when driving along with the license the IDP issued by, as it is Japanese law to have this while driving and renting a car in Japan.

Please note that whilst many countries issue International Driving Permits, they must be issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention.

If I cannot obtain a valid International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, is there another way I can drive in Japan?

Some countries do not issue permits based on the 1949 Geneva Convention, but instead have a separate agreement that allows drivers from these countries to drive in Japan with an official Japanese translation of their driver's license. A translation can be obtained from the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) or some of the respective countries' embassies or consulates in Japan. These countries are: Belgium, Estonia, France, Germany, Monaco, Slovenia, Switzerland and Taiwan.

Do I need to arrange car insurance?

Toyota's rates are inclusive of Double Protection. This will include exemption from non-operating Charge (NOC). This means, in the case of an accident, theft, breakdown or scratches and damages, payment of up to ¥50,000 of compensation for business interruption will be exempt.

Will I need snow chains for my rental car?

You do not require snow chains as all our rental cars are 4WD and are equipped with winter tyres. As long as you drive carefully this will be fine for the roads in Niseko, which are maintained daily by snow clearers.

Is it hard to drive in snow/icy conditions?

It can be difficult to drive in winter conditions especially if it is your first time. To drive safely you must drive slowly and carefully on icy roads, keeping a safe distance between yourself and other cars, whilst paying attention to the traffic conditions ahead. Try to avoid suddenly braking, accelerating and abrupt steering on icy roads as your wheels can lock up and skid. When this happens your car will be hard to control. Instead, utilise the lower gears to slow down safely and gradually. All of our rental cars are well equipped to drive in winter conditions, however as a driver you must exercise a certain amount of care and caution.

Why is not possible for me to rent a V3 van from New Chitose Airport (CTS)?

The V3 vans are Toyota’s most popular class in the winter and are all relocated to Niseko during this period, which is why you can only collect your rental from your MnK accommodation. However, you are able to return it to Sapporo Train Station or New Chitose Airport if you wish.

Is there parking provided at my accommodation?

For our guests at Country Resort and The Orchards, there are 2 car parking spaces allocated per chalet.

For our guests at Akazora, there is limited parking available in the basement. When we arrange your car rental we will also reserve your parking space at the same time.
