Plan Your Trip

Makkari

Highlights of this itinerary:
  • Fill up on Mt Yotei Spring Water
  • Bread and Pastries at Boulangerie Jin
  • Views of Mt Yotei in Outdoor Bath at Makkari Onsen

Easily one of our favourite nearby towns to venture to in the green season, you will reach Makkari in under 30 minutes by car from your MnK accommodation. Half a day will give you enough time to visit all the major sites included in this itinerary. However, if you wish to slow things down and add in some onsen time, you could spend the day exploring.

Best Time To Visit

All sites on this itinerary can be visited any time of year. If you are venturing in winter, consider including a visit to one of Makkari's many onsen. Although, our favourite time of year to visit is summer or spring, as Makkari comes to life with fresh farm produce and beautiful flowers.

Getting There

Makkari is located at the southern base of Mt Yotei. From your MnK accommodation, take Route 66 around Mt Yotei to reach Makkari in under 30 minutes by car. Additionally, for individuals interested in road cycling, this can prove a scenic and challenging route. Be sure to visit Hokkaido Wilds for free cycling touring routes.

Mt Yotei Spring Water

Out first suggestion on this itinerary is Yotei-no-Wakimizu, one of Niseko's major spring water sites. Here you are welcome to fill up on as much fresh spring water as you wish for free, so be sure to bring an empty water bottle or two.

On the same premises is Wakimizu-no-Sato, famous for producing a variety of tofu using Mt Yotei spring water. You can taste test many different types of tofu, and we recommend not passing up on their tofu donuts.

Boulangerie Jin

If remote, artisan bakeries are your thing, then a visit to Boulangerie Jin is a must! Accessible only by car or bicycle, their  wood-fire baked breads and pastries are incredible. The bakery is open from 9:00am to 6:00pm, and closed on Friday.

Pomme Restaurant

Another local, hidden gem is Pomme Restaurant. The restaurant serves up fresh, high quality dishes utilising local farm produce. The lunch course is affordable and great value for money. Whats more, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Mt Yotei from your table.

Makkari Hot Spring

A favourite onsen among locals, Makkari Hot Spring offers stunning views of Mt Yotei from its open-air hot spring. In addition, there is a sauna, indoor baths and spacious relaxing room for afterwards. Entry is only ¥600 per adult and ¥250 per child.
