Fast 5 With Our Seasonal Team: Meet Yu Shen

Our seasonal team members play an integral role in providing an unforgettable winter experience to our owners and guests. This month, we are taking 5 minutes to get to know our seasonal team members a little better by asking them 5 quick questions.

Introducing Yu Shen

Next up, we would like to introduce our friendly, calm and collected, front desk team member Yu Shen. Yu Shen is responsible for ensuring things run smoothly at The Orchards, and if you have joined us this season, it is likely that you have corresponded over email or phone with her and she has had a helping hand in making your holiday as hassle free as possible. With a warm and gentle presence, Yu Shen is a natural when it comes to providing attentive and personalised customer service. Get to know her a little better below.

Where do you call home, Yu Shen?

I am from Taipei, the capital of Taiwan.

What exactly was it that drew you to Niseko?

I wanted to travel and work somewhere in Japan that would allow me to speak English. Aside from this, I also wanted to continue practicing my Japanese language skills, so Niseko seemed like the perfect place to strike a balance between using both languages. On top of that, I love visiting onsens and I had heard great things about the natural hot springs in Hokkaido.

We know how amazing the skiing and snowboarding is in Niseko, but what are some of your favourite activities to do off the mountain?

As I mentioned, I love visiting different onsens in my spare time. I find it one of the best ways to relax and unwind! I also really love Japanese food, and have found it really fun to discover new dishes around town. My favourite so far is the soup curry on offer at Tsubara Tsubara.

In your opinion, what is one thing anyone visiting Niseko absolutely must do?

Make sure that you get on the mountain and have a go at snowboarding. Whether it's your first time trying snow sports or not, you simply cannot miss an opportunity to experience what Niseko is most famous for – powder snow!

Lastly, what is your top tip for someone who is planning to work a season in Niseko?

Touching on my previous answer, if it is your first time ever on a skiing or snowboarding holiday, or even if you have never tried skiing or snowboarding on powder before, I would recommend investing in a few lessons. Find yourself a good instructor and take a bit of time out to learn the basics or improve on your skills so that you can make the most of your time on the slopes.
